Cowes Waterfront illustration print

In this quayscape print of Cowes Waterfront, there are 24 properties along the water's edge with spectacular views of the Solent and the River Medina.

Today many of these impressive houses, apartments and clubs back onto shops on the High Street but hundreds of years ago, many were waterside wharfs where cargo was on and offloaded for businesses on the High Street.

Number 89 (top row, far left), was part of Mew Langton’s brewers in the 1850s. Beer was exported to the mainland from the waterside quay behind the High Street shop.

No 74, Commodores House (pink building on right of top section) was once Hewitt’s the Grocers, with a shop on the High Street, packing rooms behind and a warehouse on the waterfront. The building was later bought by Uffa Fox, a boat designer and sailing enthusiast who set up home, boatyard and office there in 1948.
