Fishing for shimmering mackerel - and then painting them

Sadly we haven't had any fishing opportunities for a while now, but a few summers ago, we had a small catch just off the coast of Gurnard, Isle of Wight.

Scroll down for one of the catch, and a quick sketchbook sketch of another (ink pen, watercolour, pencil crayon).

I'm counting down the days until we can head out to sea again, but in the meantime I've been trialing my new Coliro ocean shimmer palette. It's just perfect for painting shimmering mackerel and shiny fish. The photo doesn't do the paint justice, but in the sunlight it has a beautiful shiny glow that makes them pop off the page.

Watch this space for some fishy marine prints coming soon
