Watercolour print of Cowes waterfront

Ever wonder what the properties on Cowes' waterfront were like centuries ago?

Featuring 24 unique properties with spectacular views of the Solent and the River Medina, this watercolour of Cowes waterfront is a window into the past,

While today's impressive houses, apartments, and clubs front the modern High Street, many once served as bustling waterside wharfs. It was from these quays that cargo was loaded and unloaded for the businesses that lined the street.

  • A brewery on the water: In the 1850s, the property at Number 89 (top row, far left) was part of Mew Langton’s brewers. From its waterside quay behind the shop, beer was exported to the mainland.

  • The grocer and the yachtsman: Later, the distinctive pink building at No 74, now known as Commodores House, was the location of Hewitt's the Grocers. Its waterfront warehouse and packing rooms supplied the shop on the High Street. The building found new fame in 1948 when it was purchased by Uffa Fox, the legendary boat designer and sailing enthusiast, who set up his home, boatyard, and office there.
